One supremely important thing to do for the health of you memory cards is to fully erase them (zero out data) in your computer BEFORE you first use them and PERIODICALLY as well. Formatting the card in the camera is of course necessary but may not be a strong enough deterrent against the potential corruption of data that occurs over time. I recommend you follow these two links for Mac and PC for instructions on how to erase-format your cards in the computer, and THEN format in your camera. It’s better to be safe then sorry, trust me on this one!
